Professional Hand Stripping Tools

Everything You Need for Professional Hand Stripping

Professional tools, practical advice and education to help you choose the right hand stripping, carding and coat preparation tools for the dogs and coats you work with.

What Is Hand Stripping?

Hand stripping is a traditional grooming technique used to maintain the natural texture, colour and integrity of certain coat types, particularly wire and harsh coats. Unlike clipping or scissoring, which simply shorten the hair, hand stripping involves carefully removing the older coat that has reached the end of its growth cycle, using the fingers or specialised stripping tools.

Correct hand stripping involves much more than simply removing hair. Understanding coat type, texture, growth cycles and the desired finish all play an important role in how the coat is worked. When performed and maintained correctly, hand stripping helps preserve the natural harsh texture, rich colour and protective qualities that are characteristic of these coats.

Not every coat is suitable for hand stripping, and no single tool or technique is right for every coat.

Which Hand Stripping Tool Do I Need?

Choosing the right hand stripping tool depends on the coat, the job you're doing and the result you want to achieve. Stripping knives, carding tools, stones and other coat preparation tools all perform different jobs, and professional groomers will often use several tools during the same groom.

Use this guide to help narrow down which tools may suit the coat and technique you're working with.

Choose Your Stripping Knife

There isn't one stripping knife that's right for every coat. The best choice depends on the coat texture, the area you're working on and how much coat you want to remove. Fine, medium, coarse, extra coarse and double coarse teeth all have different purposes, and many professional groomers use several knives during the same groom.

New to Hand Stripping?

If you're learning to hand strip, a tool that removes smaller amounts of coat at a time can make it easier to develop your technique without accidentally creating holes in the coat.

Groomer.DK Rock N Roll
A good beginner option for rolling coats and gradually removing the top layer. It takes a relatively small amount of coat at a time, giving beginners more control and making it harder to accidentally create holes in the coat.   For heavier coat removal you may prefer a more efficient stripping knife. Stripping Stones & Diamond Tools

Diamond stripping tools are coated stripping tools rather than traditional toothed stripping knives. The textured surface helps grip the hair, making them useful for hand stripping without relying on teeth.

Traditional stripping stones work on the same principle, but are held directly in the hand, while the Groomer.DK Diamond tools have a handle for greater control and comfort. Great for Beginners.

Fine — has the finest, least textured coating in the range. Best suited to lighter, detailed work where only a small amount of grip is needed.

Coarse — has a more textured surface with greater grip, making it a versatile choice for rolling and general hand stripping.

Extra Coarse — has a heavier textured coating for greater grip, making it useful for rolling, full stripping and working through heavier coats.

Shorty — has a larger working surface than the Extra Coarse, allowing you to cover more coat with each pass. A useful option for larger body areas, rolling and full stripping when you want the grip of a stripping stone with greater coverage. View Diamond Stripping knives and Stones here

Vanessa’s Tip: Diamond stripping stones work differently to traditional stripping knives. Rather than teeth, they use a textured coating to grip the hair. The Fine, Coarse and Extra Coarse options refer to the texture of that coating, while the Shorty gives you a larger working surface. Choosing between them depends on the coat, the area you're working on and the amount of grip and coverage you need.

Want a Great All-Round Stripping Knife?

Groomer.DK Classic Range

The Classic range is a versatile professional hand stripping range, with different tooth sizes designed for different coats and stages of the groom. From detailed work and undercoat removal through to full stripping and rolling, you can choose the knife to suit the coat and the job you're doing.

Super Fine — designed for very fine, tight work and undercoat removal. Particularly useful for detail areas like ears, cheeks, skull and finer coat work. This knife is the smallest of the set.

Super Fine Long — the longer version of the Super Fine, useful for tight, flat work and areas such as cheeks skull, and ears with a little more metal working length.

Fine — a very versatile knife for full stripping, rolling and undercoat removal. One of our favourites for getting a really tight jacket and for working the head.

Medium — suited to thicker, harsher and more compact coats where the Fine may be too fine to work efficiently. Useful for general jacket work and rolling.

Coarse — originally designed for rolling coats, with wider tooth spacing that also makes it useful for working through heavier or blown coats.

Groomer.DK Retro Range

Another one of our favourite stripping knife ranges. The Retro knives have a slightly curved blade rather than a completely flat blade, allowing your thumb to sit naturally into the curve. This gives a comfortable, secure grip and good control while stripping.

Fine — great for detailed work, removing undercoat and full stripping. Particularly useful when you want a close, controlled finish.

Coarse — despite its name, we find this works more like a Medium. A great general-purpose knife and one of our favourites for rolling coats.

Extra Coarse — useful for rolling and removing larger amounts of coat, particularly on heavier or denser coats.

Double Coarse — the deepest, widest-spaced teeth in the Retro range, suited to heavier or blown coats.

Available in left and right-handed knives.

Groomer.DK Rainbow Range

The Rainbow range features distinctive slanted teeth designed to provide additional grip through the coat. This makes the range particularly useful for working through undercoat and mixed coat textures, including coats where softer hair can be more difficult to grip with a traditional stripping knife.

Fine —  full stripping and rolling. It can also be useful on mixed coat textures where you need good grip.

Medium — designed for thicker hair and very harsh or compact coats, including heavier coats. It can also be used for rolling.

Coarse — wider spacing between the teeth, particularly useful for rolling and working through very thick or dense coats.

Double Coarse — the widest spacing in the range. Useful for heavier undercoat, dense or mixed coats, rolling, flat work and working larger areas.

Available in right hand only.

Groomer.DK ERGO Range

The ERGO range is Groomer.DK's lightweight, ergonomic stripping knife range. The hand-dulled teeth are slightly curved with minimal sharpness, making the range particularly useful for controlled flat work and undercoat removal.

Super Fine — very fine teeth suited to detailed work, fine undercoat removal and smaller areas such as the head, ears and neck.

Fine — a versatile option for flat work, undercoat removal and general coat maintenance, particularly on medium to harsh coats.

Double Coarse — wider-spaced teeth suited to denser, harsher coats, larger areas, rolling and removing greater amounts of coat and undercoat.

Available in right hand only.

Carding & Undercoat Removal Tools

Carding removes dead and excess undercoat, helping the outer coat sit flatter and allowing the harsher topcoat to come through more cleanly. The amount of undercoat can vary enormously between individual dogs and breeds. Some coats naturally carry a lot, while others may have very little.

The aim isn't necessarily to remove all of the undercoat. Some breed standards call for undercoat as part of the correct coat, so particularly when preparing a dog for the show ring, it's important to consider the breed standard, the individual coat and the result you're working towards.

Regular carding can also be an important part of maintaining a hand stripped coat between stripping sessions.

Vanessa's Tip

I like to think of undercoat a little like scaffolding beneath the harsh outer coat. You don't always want to remove all of it. Leaving some undercoat can add substance where it's needed and help you create a more balanced outline.

When preparing a dog for the show ring or competition, card with the breed standard and the individual dog's structure in mind. For example, if a dog has a dip in the topline, I may leave more undercoat in that area rather than carding it heavily. That extra coat can help fill the area visually and create a smoother topline.

This is why good carding isn't simply about removing as much undercoat as possible. It's about knowing what to remove, what to leave and why.

Black Diamond Super Fine Carding Tool

A very fine carding tool with closely spaced teeth for removing fine undercoat. Best suited to coats where the fine teeth can move easily through the undercoat. On denser coats, the very close tooth spacing can make it harder to work through effectively, so a more open carding tool may be a better choice.

Blue Diamond Carding Knife

Our most popular carding knife and a great all-round choice for removing undercoat. Its more open tooth spacing makes it useful across a variety of coats and undercoat densities. It is particularly useful for cleaning out undercoat after stripping, as well as flat work, faces and smaller or more difficult areas.

Groomer.DK Twin King 2-in-1

The Twin King is a two-sided undercoat removal tool, giving you two different blade spacings in one tool. The specially dulled blades work through and remove dead coat and undercoat while helping to preserve the outer coat.

Start with the more widely spaced side to work through heavier undercoat, then change to the finer side as the coat becomes easier to work through.

Original Twin King 2-in-1 — the original plastic-handled version with two blade spacings, making it a versatile everyday choice for undercoat removal.

Extra Fine Twin King 2-in-1 — has much closer blade spacing for finer undercoat and softer coats where the Original may be too open.

Professional Steel Twin King – Small — has wider blade spacing than the Original for thicker, denser undercoat, with a smaller working width that makes it easier to use on smaller areas.

Professional Steel Twin King – Large — wider blade spacing for thick, dense coats and substantial undercoat, with a larger working width to cover bigger areas more efficiently.
